Songs for the Dying
A brief explanation as to the "why" behind the album title: I’ve been asked a lot what the name of the upcoming album is. Most conversations go like this: “What’s the album called?” “It’s going to be titled "Songs For the Dying.”“ "……so……what does that mean?” I get it. The title might seem a little dramatic to some. To others-dark and depressing. All understandable. However, to me and my band mates, it’s perfectly fitting. And I’ll tell you why… We’re all dying. Yes, in the physical sense of we will all die one day, but that’s not what I mean. I’m referring to darkness. Depression. Abuse. Insecurities. Loneliness. Heartache. Feelings of not being enough. The things that pull us out of fully living life. Even if it is for a moment. I grew up in a Christian home. Went to church every Sunday. Sang songs and read scriptures of hope and promise and freedom. While I never disliked these songs and passages there were, and have been, many times in my life when those concepts of hope and promise seemed …foreign…distant…not relatable. I think there are times when you are so desperate that things that speak of the other side of desperation are too far off to comprehend. I think songs of hope absolutely have their place in the spectrum of lyrical content. And there are many of them that I love and mean a lot to me. But I’ve never been that great at writing them. I’ve often found myself connecting with songs that aren’t necessarily hopeful, but songs that make me think someone out there knows how I feel. They’ve been through what I’m going through. I believe that sometimes people aren’t ready for hope…that what they need is to simply feel like they aren’t alone in what they feel. Enter “Songs For the Dying.” That’s my hope with this album…that someone somewhere will hear these songs and think “he knows how I feel.” That feeling can be a powerful one. I think it would be easy for someone to hear a lot of the songs on this album and classify them as depressing. And that’s fine. But I would wholeheartedly disagree. I would call them honest. They are a collection of words and musings on the human condition. Things that we all have felt and wrestled with. Things we can all relate to. I strongly believe that, while the music style may not be your taste, everyone will be able to relate to one lyric from at least one of these songs. Maybe it will make you feel like you’re not alone either. And don’t worry, there’s a few sunny moments on there too.
